Android → iPhone

Move WhatsApp from Android to iPhone — without wiping your new phone

Move to iOS is the only official way, and it demands a factory reset. Here is every method that works in 2026, what each one keeps, and where each one breaks.

Move to iOS (official)

Free · Yes — requires factory reset

Cable between devices, iOS 15.5+, Android 12+ (some older versions work via QR). Highest failure rate of all methods; chat history transfers but not always call logs or status.

Chat transfer via QR code (official)

Free · No

WhatsApp's newer chat transfer works phone-to-phone over Wi‑Fi for many Android→iPhone pairs. Availability is still rolling out and depends on both app versions — check Settings → Chats → Transfer chats first.

Export chat to email / files

Free · No

Produces a .txt or .zip you can read anywhere — but it cannot be imported back into WhatsApp. Fine for records, useless as a migration.

Third-party desktop tool

Paid ($30–50) · No

Reads the Android WhatsApp database directly and writes it into the iPhone backup format. Works after setup, keeps attachments, no reset. This is the route ChatSwitch is building (launching soon).

Every year, roughly 15–20% of new iPhone buyers switch over from Android — and almost all of them hit the same wall on day one: WhatsApp. Your chats live in a Google Drive backup, iPhone only speaks iCloud, and the two backup systems have never been able to read each other.

WhatsApp's official answer is the Move to iOS app. It works, but only if your iPhone is brand new or you're willing to erase it, only over a direct cable connection, and only on iOS 15.5 or later. If the transfer fails halfway — and it often does — you're back to a reset phone and no chats.

This page compares every route: the official one, the export fallback, and third-party transfer tools. The ChatSwitch desktop tool for this route is launching soon; every method below is described exactly as it works today.

How to do it, step by step

  1. Check what's on your Android. WhatsApp → Settings → Chats → Chat backup. Note the last backup date and size — large media libraries take the longest to move.
  2. Pick your route. New, still-in-box iPhone? Try Move to iOS first — it's free. Already set up your iPhone? Official options are basically closed; a transfer tool or the QR method is the realistic path.
  3. Keep both phones charged and on the same Wi‑Fi. Transfers die on low battery and unstable networks more often than on any software bug. 50%+ charge,勿扰模式 on.
  4. Verify before you celebrate. Open a few old chats on the iPhone, check that photos and voice notes play, and scroll to the oldest message. Only then wipe the Android.

Questions people actually ask

Yes, but not with Move to iOS — that method requires erasing the iPhone. Your realistic no-reset options are WhatsApp's QR-based direct transfer (if rolled out to your devices) or a desktop transfer tool that converts the Android database into an iPhone backup.
