iPhone → Android
Move WhatsApp from iPhone to Android — what actually works
The official cable method quietly limits which Android phones qualify. Here is the full picture, including the QR transfer and tool-based routes.
Cable transfer during setup (official)
Free · Only works during Android setup
Lightning→USB‑C cable, WhatsApp 2.21.+ on both sides. Supports Samsung and Google Pixel best; other brands have spotty support.
QR code chat transfer (official)
Free · No
Newer WhatsApp builds can transfer chats phone-to-phone via QR under Settings → Chats. Rollout is gradual — if you see 'Transfer chats', use it before anything else.
iCloud backup restore
Free · No (but doesn't work)
iCloud backups cannot be restored onto Android at all. The backup lives in Apple's format; WhatsApp on Android reads only Google Drive or local backups.
Desktop transfer tool
Paid ($30–50) · No
Converts the iPhone WhatsApp archive into Android's database format. Works on any Android model and after setup. ChatSwitch is building this (launching soon).
Going from iPhone to Android has one official path: a USB‑C to Lightning cable with the Samsung Smart Switch or Google Pixel setup flow. WhatsApp enabled chat transfers over cable in 2021, but the rollout has been slow and device-specific.
The catch: for a long time only Samsung and Google Pixel phones were supported, and your Android had to be in the initial setup state. If your Android is already set up — or you bought a OnePlus, Xiaomi, Motorola — the official route is closed.
Below: what the cable method covers, the newer QR-based chat transfer, and when a desktop tool is the only door left. ChatSwitch's iPhone→Android transfer is in development; guides below reflect how each method works today.
How to do it, step by step
- Back up the iPhone first. WhatsApp → Settings → Chats → Chat Backup → Back Up Now. Even if you won't restore from it, you want a snapshot before any transfer touches the account.
- If your Android is still in setup: use the cable. During the copy-apps step, select WhatsApp. Keep the cable connected and both phones on charge until the transfer completes.
- If your Android is already set up: check for QR transfer. On the iPhone, Settings → Chats → Transfer chats. If the option exists, follow the on-screen QR flow — it's the only free no-reset route.
- Verify attachments and old chats. Open the oldest conversations, play voice notes, check photos. Missing media is the #1 complaint on every route — catch it before wiping the iPhone.
Questions people actually ask
Officially, only if your WhatsApp build offers the QR 'Transfer chats' option — that's the one free method that works on an already-set-up Android. Without it, a desktop conversion tool is the remaining route.
