WhatsApp to a new iPhone — iCloud vs cable vs Quick Start

The smoothest transfer of the four, with one trap: iCloud restores fail quietly when storage or versions don't line up.

iCloud restore (official)

Free (needs iCloud space) · No

The standard. Fresh manual backup → restore during new-phone setup or after reinstalling WhatsApp.

Quick Start / direct device transfer (official)

Free · No

Transfers the WhatsApp app data phone-to-phone during initial setup. Clean, but only available while setting up a new iPhone.

iTunes/Finder encrypted backup

Free · No

Computer-based, bypasses iCloud storage limits. Must be encrypted or WhatsApp data isn't included.

iPhone to iPhone is WhatsApp's best-supported route: your backup lives in iCloud, your new iPhone speaks iCloud natively, and Apple's own Quick Start can even move WhatsApp as part of the full-phone transfer.

The trap is iCloud itself. If the free 5 GB is full, the backup silently stops updating weeks before you buy the new phone — and the 'restore' you get is stale. Many people only discover this after wiping the old iPhone.

Rule of thumb: make a fresh manual backup on the old iPhone the day before you transfer, and verify its timestamp in WhatsApp → Settings → Chats → Chat Backup.

How to do it, step by step

  1. Make a fresh, verified iCloud backup. Old iPhone → WhatsApp → Settings → Chats → Chat Backup → Back Up Now. Watch it complete; check the 'Last backup' timestamp.
  2. Sign the new iPhone into the same Apple ID. During setup, choose 'Restore from iCloud' — or if the phones are side by side, let Quick Start copy everything including WhatsApp.
  3. Open WhatsApp and verify the number. Restore from the offered backup. If no backup is listed, the Apple ID or phone number doesn't match — fix that before anything else.
  4. Spot-check media in old chats. Scroll to the oldest conversations and open photos and voice notes. iCloud restores occasionally drop media on slow networks; retry on Wi‑Fi if chunks are missing.

Questions people actually ask

Almost always an account mismatch: the new iPhone is signed into a different Apple ID, or WhatsApp is registered to a different number. Confirm both, pull-to-refresh the backup list, and the backup should appear.
